Like all our fellow gear heads out there, we love a good garage build! Whether you’re just getting around to that classic that’s been sitting in the garage or you have ambition and just bought a shell to start a ground up restoration and overhaul with, there’s one piece of advice we’d like to leave you with: GET ORGANIZED.

Organization and planning is a critical part of the process when it comes to car restorations. It’s far too easy to miss a step or think you did something already after long hours and nights under the hood. When you have set a checklist and you’ve created a clean and organized space to get to work in, you’ll not only notice the difference, but you’ll also have a smoother ride throughout the process too.

We’ll get to the must-have checklist for your build in another post, for this post, we’re starting from the bottom. Here’s what you need to do to get your garage in order before you even start your restoration project.

Clean Up & Organize

You simply cannot get your project started or keep in on track with a messy garage. There’s a lot of time and energy that goes into organizing your tools and having a dedicated space for everything but it certainly will go a long way in saving you time while you work. Take the time to clean, organize and get your garage in good shape before you start a large build. You want to have enough room to get around and underneath the car and you want to know where everything you need is located so you’re not wasting valuable time searching around piles of rubble for the tool you thought you had just seen somewhere.

Check Your Shelves & Order Parts

As you’re purging old, unwanted things from your garage in anticipation for the new work you’ll be starting, be sure you’re also jotting down inventory. Make a list of the things you noticed empty or missing and make it a point to order the parts you know you’re going to need well enough in advance so that you can include them in the organization phase.

Start a List & Plan

Even after you’ve swept the floors and put everything back into its rightful place, there’s still the big next steps you’ll need to think about before diving in. The planning phase is just as important pre-build. You want to hammer out some of the bigger details like what color and style options you’ll go with. Which elements in the build might require help from a professional and especially where you want to dedicate your budget as well as timelines.

There’s a lot that goes into a build, but it’s also a fun, and memorable experience. If you run into any bumps along the way or would rather have help with your car restoration project, we’re here for you!
